They make this sound when the filter needs to be cleaned – read the manual. Just clean the filter and the sound will stop. It is not going to blow up or catch fire.
Have you cleaned the grid. The snapping sounds are normal along with sparks. This will all go away after cleaning the grid. Mine does the same thing. You get snapping and sparks because the dust has balled up on the grid causing static. We all know what static does. You got it “spark and snap”. Also dry air will cause it to happen more often. What is your indoor humidity? normal is around 28 – 50
